Lucas de Man
Flemish Artist & Host, Stichting de Nieuwe Helden
Lucas de Man (1982) is a Belgian actor and director. In 2008 he graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Since then he has been working continuously on an oeuvre of various (theater) projects, performances, performances and installations in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2006 he founded INSTED, together with two fellow students, an international network for directing students.
In addition to being a theater maker at Het Zuidelijk Toneel, Lucas De Man is also a freelance director, actor and concept developer at Frascati, Toneelgroep Amsterdam and his own Nieuwe Helden Foundation. He presents various cultural programs, gives lectures and occasionally is a guest teacher. In 2007, Lucas won the Young Theater prize at the Theater aan Zee festival in Ostend for the Cassius performance. In addition, he was nominated in 2011 with designer Pascal Leboucq for the Wijnberg Scenography award for the installation SKETCH. Beginning in 2013, Lucas De Man is a theater maker at Het Zuidelijk Toneel and a member of the artistic council of the company and associated with 's-Hertogenbosch as a city artist.
In all his projects, Lucas De Man strives to make the public space not an anonymous consumer marketplace, but a place of connection, wonder, scattering, astonishment, confusion and, ultimately, encounter. Meeting, a moment of not having to, a moment in which you as a person may be yourself; vulnerable, open, ignorant and powerful.
In 2011, Lucas de Man and Pascal Leboucq were nominated for the Wijnberg Scenography Prize for the design of Sketch - Het Zuidelijk Toneel with Stichting De Nieuwe Helden.
